Questions about filter bags

Filter bag life is application dependent. A high dirt load means the filter bag will block quicker whereas applications with trace dirt will see longer life between changeouts. A correctly sized filter bag can last from weeks to months.

You will notice a reduction in flow rate or an increase in differential pressure. Usually filter bags should be replaced once the differential pressure across the filter reaches 1 bar. If you are operating at higher than room temperature then the filter bag might need replacing before 1 bar dp.

Filter bag flow rates are application dependent. Viscosity, dirt load and unique application requirements should be careful considerations. Here's an estimate for water applications:

Size 1 filter bags: Up to 18 m3/hr
Size 2 filter bags: Up to 36 m3/hr
Size 3 filter bags: Up to 4 m3/hr
Size 4 filter bags: Up to 9 m3/hr

Simple answer is, use felt bags for general particle reduction and mesh bags for removing particles of a specific size/straining.

Filter bags work by using a porous material to separate particles from a liquid that passes through them. The bag is usually made from a polymeric filter media like Polypropylene, Polyester, Nylon etc with tiny pores that allow the fluid to pass through while trapping particles that are larger than the pore size. As the contaminated fluid enters the bag, clean liquid exits through the walls while contaminants accumulate inside.

On pressurised systems, filter bags are installed inside pressure vessels which are called bag filter housings.

On gravity fed systems, the filter bags are usually suspended under a pipe or tied to the end of pipework.

Here are some considerations for filter bag sizing:

  • Flow rate
  • Operating temperature
  • Size of particles that need to be removed
  • Concentration of particles
  • Chemical compatibility of filter bag media with process fluid
  • Maintenance demand
  • Unique application requirements

Our sales team can help with filter bag sizing.
