The Ultimate Guide to Industrial Filter Bags: Types, Applications, and Selection
Filter bags are essential components in industrial liquid filtration systems, designed to remove contaminants, particles, and impurities from various industrial processes. Our comprehensive range of high-quality filter bags delivers reliable filtration performance across multiple industries, from food and beverage processing to chemical manufacturing and water treatment.
What Are Filter Bags?
Filter bags are washable nylon mesh filter bags popular for industrial, manufacturing, cosmetics and food and beverage applications thanks to their high flow rates, impressive sediment loading capacity and suitability for viscous liquids. They work by capturing solid particles from fluids, ensuring clarity and purity while prolonging equipment lifespan
Filter Bag Sizes
Standard Filter Bag Sizes
We offer four filter bag sizes to accommodate various housing configurations:
- Size 1: 7" diameter x 16" length (178mm diameter x 410mm length)
- Size 2: 7" diameter x 32" length (178mm diameter x 815mm length)
- Size 3: 4" diameter x 9" length (103mm diameter x 230mm length)
- Size 4: 4 diameter" x 15" length (103mm diameter x 385mm length)
Custom Sizes Available: In addition to standard sizes, we can supply filter bags in customer specified lengths and diameters. Custom design services for material, shape, micron rating, ring type, and seams (welded or stitched).
Replacement for Discontinued Brands: Claribag’s “CLARIBag” line offers direct performance‑equivalent alternatives to Pall FSI® bags.
Chemical‑Resistant Bags: Special materials like NOMEX and PTFE for aggressive chemicals and harsh operating conditions.
Industrial Filter Sock Flow Rates
Standard Filter Bag Sizes
We offer four filter bag sizes to accommodate various flow rate requirements:
- Size 1: up to 18 m3/hr (300 litres per minute flow rate)
- Size 2: up to 35 m3/hr (580 litres per minute flow rate)
- Size 3: up to 4 m3/hr (67 litres per minute flow rate)
- Size 4: up to 9 m3/hr (150 litres per minute flow rate)
* These flow rates are provided as a guide for water applications. Consider using lower flow rates for viscous fluids. Final filter bag flow rates will depend on application requirements. Note that open surface area of mesh type filter bags reduces considerably at under 100 micron.
Micron Ratings & Filter Media
Understanding Micron Ratings
The smaller the micron rating, the smaller the solid particles that will be prevented from passing through liquid filters.
Available Micron Ratings
- Fine filtration: 1 to 25 micron for polishing applications
- Standard filtration: 25 to 200 micron for general industrial use
- Coarse filtration: 200 to 1000 micron for pre-filtration
Available Filter Media
- Polypropylene felt (1, 5, 10, 25, 50, 100 and 200 micron)
- Polyester felt (1, 5, 10, 25, 50, 100 and 200 micron)
- Nylon mesh (1, 5, 10, 25, 50, 75, 100, 125, 150, 200, 300, 400, 500, 600, 800, 1000 micron)
- Polypropylene mesh
- Nylon felt
- PTFE felt
- NOMEX
Industrial Applications
Food & Beverage Industry
Filtration of wine, spirits and beer, removal of particles from edible oils, removal of carbon and other powders, slime removal in gelatin, liquid sugar, thick juice, corn syrup polishing, starch processing, vinegar, milk processing and soft drinks.
Chemical Processing
Activated carbon or catalyst removal in the fine chemicals industry. Filtration of acids and solvents.
Automotive Industry
Filtration of pretreatment bath, filtration of e-coat, top coat and clear coat, primer, paint ring line filters, parts cleaning fluids, drawing compounds, lubricants, metal working fluids and pump intake filters.
Water Treatment
Bag filters remove everything from sediment to other solids to some forms of liquid from the water in both commercial use and industrial applications.
Process Water (Chilled & Hot Water Circuits)
Bag filters remove particles, rust and sediment from recirculating water systems to protect valves and pumps and to maintain heat transfer efficiency.
Personal Hygiene Products
Filter bags are used to remove suspended solids and undissolved powders from shampoos, hand gels, conditioners and fragrances.
Filter Bag Housing Compatibility
Housing Material Options
Filter housings are essential components that hold the filter bags in place within the filtration system. Compatible housing materials include:
- Stainless Steel: Offers excellent corrosion resistance and durability, ideal for harsh environments.
- Plastic Housings: Resistant to corrosion and attack by aggressive chemicals. Our plastic bag filter housings are available in Polypropylene, HDPE and PVDF.
Installation & Maintenance
Easy Installation Process
For most uses a bag filter housing is recommended. In some batch applications, bag filters can be used without a housing by suspending the bag filter over a tank and pouring liquid through, or tying it around the neck of a pipe.
- Clean installation area recommended
- Proper collar alignment ensures leak-free operation
- Gentle handling prevents media damage
- System flush may be beneficial for critical applications
Maintenance Guidelines
It is recommended to change the filter bag at a differential pressure of 1 bar. Regular maintenance ensures optimal filtration performance and extends filter life.
- DP Indicator: Replace when differential pressure reaches 1 bar
- Visual Inspection: Monitor for even loading patterns
- Flow Rate Tracking: Document performance trends
- Record Keeping: Maintain maintenance logs
Replacement Indicators
- Increased differential pressure across the filter
- Reduced flow rates
- Visual inspection showing excessive dirt loading
- Recommended service intervals based on application
Troubleshooting Common Issues
Premature Bag Failure
Causes include incorrect micron rating selection, chemical incompatibility, excessive pressure differentials, or installation errors. Install differential pressure gauge, maintain service logs, consider changing micron rating, installing a prefilter or increasing filtration surface area.
Poor Filtration Performance
Issues may stem from bag bypass, incorrect miron rating selection, or upstream process changes affecting particle characteristics. Regular monitoring and performance verification help identify performance degradation. Poor sealing of bags can allow unfiltered water to pass around the bag. Consider changing micron rating or filter media.
High Pressure Drop
Rapid pressure rise may indicate undersized bags, inappropriate micron rating, or changes in feed water characteristics. Consider system modifications or bag selection adjustments. Usually indicates a blocked filter, undersized bag or incorrect micron rating.
Chemical compatibility
Certain process streams may degrade polyester or nylon filter media, requiring polypropylene or specialty materials.
Temperature limitations
Elevated process water temperatures may exceed standard bag media ratings.
